Project Scope and Objectives

The general objective is the development of a graphene-based gas sensors array for the assessment of air quality inside greenhouses. The sensorial array is integrated with a data
acquisition system, for real-time analysis. Four specific objectives help attain the general objective:

O1: Design of the components for the experimental model – represents the first step in the development of the gas sensors array and corresponds to the selection of appropriate functionalization routes for the graphene, so that the final properties will fit the parameters necessary for air quality evaluation. Graphenes will be chemically modified with functional groups to ensure reversible binding with the analytes (COx, NOx, SO2, ethylene, etc.) The end result is a pattern for step-by-step functionalization of the graphene. A pattern for the electrical circuit will also be developed.

O2: Development of the components and integration – represents the main part in the development of the gas sensors array and corresponds to the fabrication process for the functionalization of graphene and the electrical circuit development. All the materials for functionalization will be closely monitored during the chemical process to ensure that the desired properties are reached. Subsequent to the component fabrication, the integration process will produce as the end result an experimental model, which will be tested in O3.

O3: Validation of the experimental model – the experimental model developed at O2 will be tested in laboratory conditions similar to the ones identified in greenhouses, for evaluating its performance. The end result is a validation report for the performance characteristics of the experimental model.

O4: Efficient and smooth coordination of all planned project activities, devising and maintaining project work plan – corresponds to the management work package, which ensures reaching the main objective of the project.
